STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) Code

What exactly is the Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) Code?

Each city, village, and town in India has been given its own Subscriber Trunk Dialing Code, which is more commonly referred to as an STD Code. STD codes can be broken down into a variety of subcategories according to the population of the city. The number of digits in an STD code can range anywhere from 2 to 8.

The standard telephone dialing code in large cities and the most populous metropolitan areas, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, and Kolkata, is two digits. On the other hand, STD codes consisting of three digits are used in Tier 2 cities like Patiala, Nashik, Surat, Durgapur, Kochi, Kolhapur, and Jalandhar, as well as other smaller cities.

How Should the STD Code Be Used?

The length of the subscriber's phone number can range from six to eight digits, depending on the number of digits in the STD code. The STD code can be either four, three, or two digits long.

  • When there are only two digits in the STD code, the subscriber's phone number will have a total of eight digits (2 Digits STD Code + 8 Digits subscriber's phone number).

  • When the STD code is three digits, the subscriber's phone number will be seven digits (3 digits for the STD code plus 7 digits for the subscriber's phone number).

  • When the STD code is four digits, the subscriber's phone number will be six digits long (that is, 4 digits for the STD code plus 6 digits for the subscriber's phone number).
