An ABA number (also known as a routing number or routing transfer number) is a nine-character sequence used by banks to find specific financial institutions in the United States.


History of ABA Routing Number

The American Bankers Association created the ABA routing number in 1910. The ABA routing number has evolved over time to accommodate the Federal Reserve System, the introduction of MICR, the Expedited Funds Availability Act, and Check 21.


Usage of ABA Routing Number

An ABA number is required for wire transfers and electronic automatic clearing house (ACH) transactions such as

  • Electronic funds transfer.
  • Direct deposit.
  • Direct payment of consumer bills.
  • E-checks, and tax payments.

Formation of the ABA Routing Number:

The formation of ABA routing number is as follows:

  • The first four digits represent the Federal Reserve symbol.
  • The next two digits specify which Federal Reserve Bank electronic and wire transfers will be routed through.
  • The next digit represents the cheque processing center identifier.
  • The next digit represents the bank district identifier and.
  • The last digit represent the cheque digit.

Method of Calculating Chequesum

The cheque digit is the routing number's ninth digit and must meet the following criteria.

3(d1 + d4 + d7) + 7(d2 + d5 + d8) + (d3 + d6 + d9) mod 10 = 0
(Mod or modulo is the remainder of a division operation.)
