Belgium bank code guide
When to use Three-digit bank identification code, what to request from the bank, and how to interpret directory results.
Domestic payments
Use the recipient’s Belgian IBAN. The institution code is the three-digit prefix of the national account-number component.
International payments
Use the bank’s IBAN and any BIC or additional routing instructions required by the sending bank.
Important distinctions
- Keep leading zeros in three-digit institution codes.
- Reserved or unavailable source slots are not banks; these placeholders are excluded from our directory.
- One bank can have several institution codes. A code match is not a branch-location or account-ownership check.
How to find and confirm the identifier
- Ask the recipient to obtain payment instructions from their bank’s official app, statement or website.
- Match the country, identifier type and institution. Keep leading zeros and do not substitute a different code type.
- For a changed bank or branch, verify the replacement instructions directly with the bank. A similar name is not enough.
