Austria bank code guide
When to use Five-digit BLZ, what to request from the bank, and how to interpret directory results.
Domestic payments
For SEPA euro payments, obtain the recipient’s IBAN. An Austrian BLZ identifies the institution within the national account-number structure.
International payments
Follow the recipient bank’s IBAN, BIC and currency-specific instructions.
Important distinctions
- Display the BLZ with all five digits, including leading zeros.
- The OeNB SEPA directory is an institution reference and is not a complete retail-branch directory.
- A shared or central institution code should not be interpreted as a unique local branch address.
How to find and confirm the identifier
- Ask the recipient to obtain payment instructions from their bank’s official app, statement or website.
- Match the country, identifier type and institution. Keep leading zeros and do not substitute a different code type.
- For a changed bank or branch, verify the replacement instructions directly with the bank. A similar name is not enough.
